Lynda Mapes is the author of Witness Tree: Seasons of Change with a Century-Old Oak (Bloomsbury, 2017), Elwha: A River Reborn (Mountaineers Books, 2013), Breaking Ground: The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe and the Unearthing of Tse-whit-zen Village (University of Washington Press, 2009), and Washington: The Spirit of the Land (Voyageur Press, 2002).

She is the recipient of a Knight Fellowship in Science Journalism at MIT, a Bullard Fellowship, and a Fellowship and writer residency at the Harvard Forest.

As a journalist at the Seattle Times, Mapes closely covers environmental and tribal topics.
