Gail Boyer Hayes has written almost everything except computer code: magazine and newspaper articles, two well-received nonfiction books, and speeches for national politicians on both sides of the aisle. She headed the energy program at the Environmental Law Institute and practiced law in the District of Columbia, Colorado, and California. With her husband Denis Hayes, she authored Cowed: The Hidden Impact of 93 Million Cows on America's Health, Economy, Politics, Culture, and Environment.

When a young woman, she earned a BA from UCLA in English literature, did a year of graduate work in journalism at UCLA (where she won the California Sun award for the best writing), then wrote for and was promoted to senior editor of Careers Today magazine. For over a year she co-hosted the live, primetime “City Watchers” television show on KCET in Los Angeles. On the side, she reviewed books for the St. Louis Post Dispatch for 20 years and wrote short stories. She knows how to fly an airplane and can groom a Newfoundland dog.
